What Is a Belt Rake—and Why Is It Ideal for Small-Farm Hay Production?

At Tractor Tools Direct, our Ibex Belt Rake has quickly become one of our top-selling products. Interestingly, it's also one that many customers haven’t heard of—until they find it on our website. So in this month’s blog, we’re diving into the question: What is a belt rake, and why is it such a great choice for small farms?

What Is a Belt Rake?

While belt rakes have been widely used in Europe for years, they’re gaining popularity here in the U.S.—especially among small-acreage hay producers. A belt rake is a simple, high-quality, and highly efficient machine that’s designed to be easy to operate and compatible with compact tractors.

The belt rake uses two large belts powered by your tractor’s PTO (Power Take-Off). A series of tines mounted on the belts move perpendicular to the direction of travel, just above the ground. As the machine passes through the field, the tines lift the hay and move it to one side, where it hits a hay stop and drops to the ground in a fluffy, even windrow. Need to ted instead of rake? Simply remove the hay stop—no tools required.

Why Small-Acreage Farmers Love Belt Rakes

  1. Compact and Maneuverable
Unlike many conventional rakes, a belt rake is mounted directly behind the tractor, making it perfect for tight, irregularly shaped, or fenced-in fields. Its compact design also means better control, since operators don’t need to constantly twist around wondering where their rake is–it’s always directly behind the tractor.
  2.  Light Weight = Safer Operation on Slopes
Belt rakes are lightweight, which makes them safer to use on hilly terrain than traditional hay rakes. Their design also makes them easier to lift and transport with smaller tractors.
  3. Excellent Performance in Tight Spaces and Around Corners
Because the rake keeps working even when the tractor is stationary or backing up, you can use it in tight spots where other rakes can’t go. It also does a much better job around corners—unlike wheel rakes, which often leave messy piles.
  4. Adjustable Windrow Width
Matching windrow size to your baler has never been easier. Belt rakes let you adjust the windrow width, so you get a clean, consistent row that dries well and bales easily.
  5. Beginner Friendly
Belt rakes are easy to connect and simple to operate. Raking height is quickly adjustable with levers on the pneumatic wheels, so you’re ready to go in no time—even if you're new to haymaking.

The Belt Rake - A Rake and Tedder in 1

One of the standout features of the Ibex Belt Rake is its two-in-one functionality. With the hay stop removed, it converts into a tedder in just 30 seconds—no tools required. This dual functionality reduces the need for extra equipment, saving both storage space and money.

Belt Rake - Versatile Beyond the Hay Field

While belt rakes excel at making hay, they’re also great for raking leaves, pine straw, and other debris. Smaller models are ideal for use in pine plantations, orchards, and vineyards, fitting easily between tree rows or vines.
